Are you saying by default the "error.log" was not getting created ?

Can you see this logger in http://host:port/system/console/slinglog

Can you go to http://<host>:<port>/system/console/bundles and restart the following bundles:

org.apache.sling.commons.logservice
org.apache.sling.commons.log

com.adobe.granite.logging

com.adobe.granite.requests.logging

log4j.over.slf4j
