Hi,
I need to arrive at Hardware sizing for a proposed AEM solution considering Data Center ( 2 node AA cluster) and DR (2 node AP cluster) for 200 concurrent users.
Production Author Instance: OS, Hard Disk size, RAM size, CPU Cores and any other parameters.
Production Publish Instance: OS, Hard Disk size, RAM size, CPU Cores and any other parameters.
Web Server: OS, Hard Disk, RAM, CPU Cores and any other parameters.
I visited multiple URLs on this topic, but all these are at a high level.
Arriving at these numbers is very difficult by reading them.
With so many scenarios and parameters around, I risk sounding too generic in my query.
Of course, we could make some assumptions.
Could you please guide me here?
Appreciate your responses.
Thanks,
Rama.

Data Center 2 node AA cluster. Is this Author Author cluster? Are you using Mongo? There is no clustering with TarMK
DR 2 node AP Cluster. Is this Author Publish? Again you mention cluster.
Which resources have you checked, it would be good to see the list.
[0] Is still the best place to start.

Hi Opkar,

AA--> Active Active.
Using Mongo (to support horizontal scalability and huge UGC, even if means taking some beating on performance)
DR 2 node AP Cluster. Is this Author Publish? Again you mention cluster.
DR --> Disaster Recovery
AP --> Active Passive
Which resources have you checked, it would be good to see the list.

Appreciate your replies.

Thanks Rama,
in your configuration can you specify how many author and how many publish instances you have?
Also, a Publish Mongo cluster is not recommended, you can use MSRP[0] on the publish tier to support UGC.

Opkar

Hi Opkar and all,
Assumptions:
1. Publish: Data Center ( 2 node AA cluster) and DR (2 node AP cluster) for 200 concurrent users.
2. Author: Data Center ( 2 node AA cluster) and DR (2 node AP cluster) for 200 concurrent users.
3. Since Publish Mongo cluster is not recommended, we use ASRP on the publish tier to support UGC.
4. In AEM 6.0, Author can have only Active-Passive clustering, and not Active-Active.
Questions:
1. How could I arrive at number of author and publish instances? Must be based on some concurrent user volume and page size parameters
3. Is there any case study on the following, with some justifications? This will tell me some bench mark and hopefully I could extrapolate it to my requirement. Currently, I do not have any of the deciding volume parameters, except for the above and so have to make some assumptions and represent the sizing metrics.
a. Production Author Instance: OS, Hard Disk size, RAM size, CPU Cores and any other parameters.
b. Production Publish Instance: OS, Hard Disk size, RAM size, CPU Cores and any other parameters.
c. Web Server: OS, Hard Disk, RAM, CPU Cores and any other parameters.
d. ASRP: OS, Hard Disk, RAM, CPU Cores and any other parameters.
I never did this sizing exercise earlier and so please pardon me for so many questions.
Thanks,
Rama.

For sizing use the hardware sizing docuemnt[0], there are hardware recommendations in that page
You need to review the recommended deployment options[1] to see if you even require a clustered setup for author, there is a specific section entitled "Exceptions for choosing AEM MongoMK over TarMK on Publish Instances"
I'd recommend working with Adobe Consulting, an experienced partner or the Adobe sales team if you need more detailed help.

Hi,
for what kind of application do you want to build this sizing? How much content do you plan to have in authoring instances, how much on publish instances? Do these 200 concurrent users refer to authoring system? How much traffic/pageviews/hits do you anticipate on publish? Can you use a CDN?
Sizing is very complex topic; the more you know about the usecase, the application and other constraints, the less assumptions do you need to make. And then the result can be much more accurate.
kind regards,
Jörg

Hi Jorg and all,
It is in Publish that 200 concurrent users will access, and we could assume 50 concurrent users in Author.
I completely agree with you that without having sufficient info, we end up making more assumptions.
I also say that the "complete Info" means a lot of data on various parameters.
Whatever it is, do we have any sample sizing of servers, based on some assumptions?
My hope is that from that, I will be able to extrapolate to my requirement and use.
At least one sample excel case study must be there somewhere!
I am not trying to compare, but for Documentum, there is a tool which takes some parameters and outputs sizing info.
Appreciate your support.
Thanks,
Rama.

Hi,
I don't think, that there is a sample sheet available; but you can find a formula on [1]; but in many applications there are a lot of other factors which are not reflected in this formula.
