Brand Portal Collections and Thumbnails

I have a large amount of collections with hundreds of assets. Has anyone noticed performance issues when loading the Collections page? I'm using Smart Collections and my thinking is that the page has to grab the 4 images from the search. Will I get better performance if I replace the thumbnail with a single image?
