How to Enable tracking lightbox open as pageview

Avatar

Is it possible when a user opens a lightbox that a pageview can be fired from that event? Sounds like a simple question but it would be interesting functionality to enable to see if our lightboxes and pages within those are being viewed or not.

With Launch, you can choose to trigger an action (s.tl) or a page view (s.t) on any trigger. If you consider your lightbox to be significant enough that you want to track it as a Page View, then you should have no problem doing so.

There is no "magic switch" to turn on, if that is what you are talking about.. but if you work with your developers to create a trigger when a lightbox is opened, you can create a rule (or modify your existing rule) to track those as pages.

Just be aware that tracking those lightboxes as page views could be seen as inflation of your stats... but, if the lightbox is a significant enough content, then the argument could be made to justify that sort of tracking. Similar to how "tabs" inside a page could be interpreted... if I have small blocks with tabbed views, I track those with actions... but, if I have pages where the majority of the page changes with the tab navigation, then I track those as page views. I make sure that these are documented, so that if there are any questions I can justify what constitutes a page.

Oh, I should also add, if you are using WebSDK or sending data to CJA, the same applies... you have control over what triggers a page view, and what triggers an action...

We are using WebSDK. I guess I'm more so asking for guidance on how to enable that type of tracking, I'm still fairly new to Analytics and Launch. The lightbox specifically is a user started flow where they can get guided to healthcare resources that could be useful to them, like a questionnaire to help set them on the right track for why they visited. This will then redirect them to a page with the resource they drilled into. One of our UX researchers is interested to see how many are actually starting that flow, how deep they get, or if they cancel out and asked if I could treat them as a pageview rather than a click.

Every site implementation is different...

If you are using the Adobe Client Data Layer, that your developers are pushing events (with relevant data) to that data layer, when the lightbox is opened, you would get your developers to push that information to the data layer... then you would create a trigger for that event in Launch, making sure that all the relevant data and the correct type of event is sent (i.e. a page view or an action).

If you are using something else, like maybe you are using the GTM data layer so that you can leverage both Adobe and GA in parallel... it would be similar to the above.

If you are using a custom solution, then you might have your developers trigger a custom JS event, and you create a listener for that.... or maybe something else that falls in line with your site design....

Without knowing how your site and the tracking implementation was done, it's hard for us to recommend an exact course of action...

HI @jonathancastillo

to add to what @Jennifer_Dungan wrote.

Maybe you can explain a little the setup you are using. Meaning

  • are you using AppMeasurement or the WebSDK
  • how are these lightbox opens behaving e.g., are they triggering some kind of event in the data layer or a custom event that Launch could listen to? How exactly is your setup structured?
  • are you even using a tag management system like Launch?

It is typically not very complicated to integrate as you wish, but understanding the setup is crucial

Cheers from Switzerland!
