Auto update percent complete on tasks

Create a task setting that will allow percent complete to update automatically as a function of calendar time. For instance in a task where a single resource is 100% allocated for a fixed period of time, have a way for the system to update percent complete based on today's date in comparison to the start and end dates.Aut

I would actually prefer it auto calculate based on Actual Hours (like MS Project). If Planned Hours = 40 hours, and Actual Hours is 20 = 50%.

The only risk with allowing % complete to calculate via calendar time is that assumes the person has been working on the task and is exactly on target (which I find to be rare :))

In my environment I have staff that are allocated 100% to a single project and they do not go in to the system and record time against their project. That is why I am looking for a task setting that will auto calculate percentage complete based on time. Essentially these contracts are providing a full time resource for a set period of time.

That's awesome. What I would give to have ANY resource full time on one project :). I'm hoping we get there some day.

But the risk I mention is still real. If it auto calculates by passing time, it'll automatically show the task as exactly on time, all the time, which can be misleading and give you false information about the status of your project. How would you be able to truly know when a task is late or ahead of schedule?

Agreed !

This should be a rolling progression of % complete based on effort & duration. Nonsense to have it show ZERO until completion date

I would like the following 3 options:

1. auto calculate based on hours spent

2. auto calculate based on duration spent

3. manually calculate

There are scenarios where manual is appropriate so task progress is not assumed but rather based on the PM's assessment of earned value. Alternatively, for operational tasks that span the whole year, it is a burden for that to be manual and automated would be preferable either by time or my usage of hours.

I agree with Sara Rothkopf...

1. auto calculate based on hours spent

2. auto calculate based on duration spent

3. manually calculate

I think this is a product deficiency. I agree with vic it should be based on actual hours calculated from planned hours. If the task auto completes this would also allow the person completing the task to have a conversation with the Project Owner to explain the increased need for Planned hours. This promotes communication across teams, helps prevent scope creep. THIS IS A MUST most programs do this. even though it is a quick thing to add the % complete manually when you add this up across all the tasks in an organizations projects this is a lot of time and would be a huge time savings. I understand the risk but I think that should be the customers choice. there could be a setting that allows or prevents this. Huge issue for my team.
