I have not read anywhere that virtual components are supported in editable templates. And as they do not show up in editable template view - i suspect that are not meant to work with editable templates, In the Weekend tutorial - there is no mention of them: Getting Started with AEM Sites - WKND Tuto...

Core Components are meant to be used in pages. You use Granite data types in dialogs - not core components.

This looks like a ACS-COmmons issue. I would proceed as you have stated to make this fix.

Gaurav is correct - you need to implement JavaScript logic.

Editing a page in TOuch UI does not impact the Side Kick - which is a Classic UI tool.
