What, if any, functionality exists in Brand Portal that cannot be replicated with custom coding/configuration in AEM / Assets alone?

my company has a limited version of AEM with basically just the DAM. Can I use this to create a file upload page for users to upload files which must meet specific criteria such as format, frame rate, resolution,etc. I'd like to be able to have different sets of criteria for different types of files...
