which version of java activation are you using ?? Also can you give more details on your JRE , AEM versions ?

'Reference' OOB is built to get all the references at the page level. So you might have to build similar solution separately for components aswell if you need it but you shouldnt be changing the functionality of Page references.

you should be able to see that css class applied in the page if not in the RTE. ofcourse within RTE the clientlibs will not be reachable and hence you cannot get the same experience.
