Yes. I have them in separate folders. I am starting to think that I do something wrong when I shut them down. I will try to watch closely the error.log when Ctrl+C them. 

I forgot to say that I started the author instance today with the following command: java -Xmx4096m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -jar aem-author-p4502.jar but other days I have used the start.bat with Xmx4096m
