Trigger a user exception from a short-lived process?

Is it possible to force a process to fail? For example, I have a short-lived process that is invoked by a watched folder which writes a file to an output folder. I'd like to be able to fail the process if the output folder does not exist; ie. send the job to the 'failure' folder. I'd also like to be able to specify a message in the failure.log file.

....but the process will fail if you try to write to a folder that doesn't exist.
