Changing Appearance of a Check Mark to an X

I've created a static PDF form with quite a few check boxes which I then saved as a dynamic PDF. The check boxes in the static PDF appeared as X's but then appeared as check marks in the dynamic PDF. Is there a way to make the check marks appear as X's in the dynamic PDF? I've searched the forums and have not seen a topic addressing this issue.
