also you can click on the logs in the importer and see which step is getting failed and the same can be cross referenced with the error.log file.
I have tried to test this functionality and able to import the page with out any failure.

POST /libs/wcm/bin/siteimporter HTTP/1.1] com.day.cq.wcm.siteimporter.ImporterContext Error while extracting CSS references from http://www.google.com
POST /libs/wcm/bin/siteimporter HTTP/1.1] com.day.cq.wcm.siteimporter.ImporterContext Could not obtain remote resource http://www.google.com
These 3 are the main errors I am getting after going through the log file . If you can kindly suggest ways in which I can resolve the error or as to why I am having this error in the first place.
Thanks in Advance

Go to "http://host:port/system/console/configMgr" page and provide proxy details and try once. If still not solving the problem not sure on your local instance and outside network connectivity settings.
