How to replace a hierarchy of pages with new pages using different template and same path?

We have recently developed some new editable templates and components including a component which isn't compatible with static templates. As we're soon moving to AEM Cloud from 6.5, we need to make this change and don't want to make the new component compatible with the older template which will gradually be phased out. We need to replace a hierarchy of pages 3 levels deep using older static templates with a new series of pages which use the new template and feature the necessary component. We need to retain the same path we currently have after the change. The parent page we need to make this change to currently has approx 450 child pages. See example below:

  • Home
    • Study (keeping existing template)
      • Programs /home/study/programs (changing this page and approx 450 child pages below it)

What's the best and simplest method to replace the old hierarchy of pages with the new at the same path as the existing pages and update the inbound references in the process?
