As of April 10, 2018, Google has deprecated Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) and is being replaced by Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM). The GCM server and client APIs are deprecated and will be removed as soon as May 29, 2019. As such, Google is recommending developers upgrade their applications to FCM as soon as possible to avoid disruptions in service. The contact listed for your Google Play developer account should be receiving communications regarding GCM deprecation with further details. Adobe recommends your Adobe Campaign admin and app development lead coordinate a successful update plan for your mobile app.

Up to this point, Adobe Campaign Classic’s Android SDK depended on GCM APIs to deliver push notifications to Android devices. With the deprecation of GCM by Google, we have updated the Adobe Campaign Classic SDK to comply with the new FCM standard. Please ensure that you update to Adobe Campaign Classic SDK v1.0.27 or switch to the Adobe Experience Cloud SDK before May 27th. Details on upgrading the SDK can be found in our documentation.

Finally, the Adobe Campaign Classic Android connector was updated to Version 2 in Adobe Campaign Classic 18.10 to comply with the new FCM standard. Your existing Android Connector will be automatically updated to Version 2 on May 27th. Please note, there is no downtime associated with this update. This update is required to ensure continuity of push messaging to your Android application(s) after May 29th.

If you prefer to manually update the connector before May 27th, you may do so by following this documentation.

For additional details on the transition from GCM to FCM, please refer to Google’s FAQ.
