How to create SEO segment?

Avatar

Hi all,

I've read so many different ways to create a segment in Adobe Analytics to just see SEO visits.

I'm trying to apply a segment over an application form funnel to determine which applications were submitted by users who entered our site via organic search vs. those who entered on a paid SEM result.

So far I've been using the following to create a SEO segment:

Segment container = Visit

Referrer type = Search AND external campaign 'does NOT exist'

Will this be accurate? Or do I need to use:

Segment container = Visit

Referrer type = Search AND EXCLUDE external campaign 'exists'

Or do I simply use this?

Segment container = Visit

Paid search = Natural

Given I'm not sure how our Adobe Analytics implementation was set up, I'm not sure whether 'Paid search' is accurate.

Appreciate your help, thanks all!

Hi inthegrid,

When creating segments that attempt to exclude some visitors, then I would always recommend using an Excludes container over a regular rule with a 'does NOT exist' condition.

Paid Search Detection can be configured by an Adobe Analytics admin (it doesn't need a code change). Instructions can be found here: https://marketing.adobe.com/resources/help/en_US/reference/t_paid_search_detection.html

Once this has been setup, the Paid Search dimension should be correctly set, and you will be able to use the simpler segment definition you shared:

Segment container = Visit

Paid search = Natural

If you are doing a lot of traffic source reporting, consider setting up Marketing Channel Rules as described here: https://marketing.adobe.com/resources/help/en_US/mchannel/
