Better granularity for connection type?i.e. with connection speed!

Is some technical possibility to become more detailled information about with connection type/speed the user has?

A report with 95% LAN doesn't give me detailled information about the connection of our customers.

I know that Google Analytics has a report  "Connection speed" where you can found values for

Cable

T1

DSL

Dial-up

OC3

Unknown

It seem to be difficult to become this information because 30% of the traffic is shown as "Unknown". But maybe they are other possibilities to know more then only "LAN"

Browsers typically are not especially forthcoming with this information. In fact, IE is the only browser that reports Connection Type at all (which probably explains your "Unknown" traffic). I'm guessing that Google provides additional detail by looking at the ISP domain; for example, if I am browsing the web with comcast.net as my ISP, you can be fairly certain that I'm on a cable connection because Comcast only offers cable Internet services. Other ISPs only offer DSL, or dial-up, etc. Do you know whether that's how the Google is classifying the connection types?

I would not rely on that information. IE is exposing the type of how you are connected to the WWW, where VPN is often exposed as modem, since windows is using a dial-up entry for that.

Unless you measure the speed of downloading a 1MB jpg/.. and submit this information to OMTR, I would not use that information in any way.

If you have videos or big flash files on your site, you could implement some slick code to get more precise information.
