Warning for right-clickers - this is being removed in 2019.1

Avatar

Hi, I, and most of our PMs, heavily use the right-click functionality to insert new tasks, delete tasks, edit tasks etc. In 2019.1 with the introduction of the new Task List functionality, the right-click function is being removed and instead, users are shown 3 small dots on the right of the task name box. If they click this then they get the same context menu that they used to get with right-clicking. The main issue with this is that it really slows users down when they are making lots of edits/insertions etc. With right-clicking, you can right-click anywhere on the task and the menu appears. With this change, users will need to find and precisely click on the 3 dots...this is surprisingly tricky and really slows me down, and it feels like a massive backwards step in terms of ease of use. A secondary issue is that the space for the 3 dots is taken out of the Task Name field so it adds extra blank space and consumes precious screen real estate. I really don't like this change and have passed this feedback on to Workfront several times but it looks like they're persisting with this change. If you agree (or disagree) with me, please add your comments here and also submit a ticket to Support to pass on to Product Management if you would like this decision revisited. Thanks Regards, David David Cornwell

Thank you for the reply Wade. Unfortunately, I must still agree with my colleagues here - removing the right click functionality negatively impacts a majority of the user base. It seems that this needs further discussion. I would be happy to participate in conversations on this topic with any Workfront team members, and to arrange for some of my users to do so as well. Hi David, Fabulous thread with insight and passion: thank you for starting it! Lotta thoughts led to a lotta links, so (iPhone in hand) I'm going to use footnotes for a change. Each Saturday, I receive a newsletter from OpenView (1), a venture capital company that invested in Workfront (2) in 2007. Scott Maxwell founded OpenView, and he lists Workfront on his portfolio (3) as one of the three companies of seventeen that has not (yet) been acquired. Part of OpenView's guiding strategy is creating product-led companies (4). Scott is also contributes articles to the newsletter (to which I pay particular attention), and in today's edition, he offered one explaining the two paths a product-led company can take to be successful (5) . Having just returned from attending Workfront's Partner Day and Sales Kickoff in Las Vegas, I was pleased to confirm that Workfront is having great success and continues to grow (6). That said, Scott's article implies that a product-led company must choose one of the two paths Scott describes. If so, and Workfront is following Scott's advice, perhaps this thread illustrates Workfront's transition between those paths. Hi Doug - thanks for the links. So I presume you're suggesting that Workfront are "burning the boats" and moving to a direction driven by their product management with less input from customers? The article is a bit contradictory in a couple of places but that's what I made of it. Of course the benefits of product management are to weed out the "I want a helicopter pad" requests and focus on the big picture...no problems with that. I guess it comes down to what is the grand vision for the product that the product management team are aiming towards. Is it meant to continue to suit enterprise project and resource management or not? The decision to remove right-click is one of a few changes over the last few years to indicate that this may not be the primary focus. e.g. The new Home calendar which does away with all of the information that is in the old My Work calendar regarding the pre-planning of the tasks (hour contouring etc). To ensure I wasn't out of sync, I've surveyed a bunch of our project managers individually today and they were universally horrified at the idea of losing right-click functionality. Comments such as "Workfront is hard enough already...don't make it harder" and "this will reduce my efficiency". I'll leave it at that because I've made my point, but I really hope that something more can be done. Please don't take our segment of the market for granted. David Cornwell

Like most people here, I understand wanting to add functionality for mobile users but don't understand why we can't have the three dots AND right-mouse click. So many other parts of Workfront are based on giving users many ways to skin a cat. To pick one particular thing and say "Nope. You HAVE to do it this way, and this way only" seems ... strange. Couldn't agree more - having the option would serve both purposes without making myself nor my colleagues less efficient. I agree, this is a really bad idea! I use the right click functionality constantly. Maybe we can get Workfront to change their minds. Kathy Wiley Marketing Traffic Manager[ Food Lion Ahold Delhaize Salisbury, NC 704-310-3759

I agree with the other users in this discussion, losing the right-click functionality is an issue for my team and our end users. I'm all for Workfront making updates and adding new functionality, but not at the expense of current options (especially something such as right-click, which is used across multiple applications/ webpages/ softwares/ etc.). I appreciate that Wade responded to the thread, but it didn't provide any real reasoning behind why this change is happening other than it's what they decided. I understand it may improve the capabilities on the mobile platform, but I would venture that the majority of users don't use the mobile version regularly (or for larger projects/campaigns or the bulk of their daily work), so it doesn't feel like a strong enough reason to justify this change. Hello, again. The past several weeks have been very interesting and informative as we have been testing new features planned for the 19.1 release. Thanks for utilizing the preview environments. We have received a lot of feedback and have had many great conversations with customers-including several of you in this thread. Thanks for your time and your passion. I'm happy to let you know that the custom right-click menu (within tables) will remain in Workfront. We'll be adding it back to Preview before the 19.1 release, resulting in no change related to this functionality in Production. As I mentioned previously, overriding the native right-click behavior is a tricky thing. We are working hard to improve the usability and accessibility of our products. We're also working hard to help you work more efficiently, with increased speed and clarity. We're also committed to making sure that features are discoverable and intuitive-for all types of users, doing all types of work, on all types of devices. Often these things are in conflict with each other. This isn't just about mobile though. We're not building for the lowest common denominator at the sacrifice of you being as productive and successful as possible. We're committed to developing innovative solutions that help everyone win. To this end, the button-based contextual menu will also remain in the product. We will continue to monitor and perform research on both solutions. We believe that both can be improved upon and anticipate more exciting things for you to seen soon. My best, Wade
