We've buried the default Projects tab and are using dashboards in our custom layouts almost exclusively. It's made a world of difference for the users, as we put a good amount of thought into the content and appearance of the dashboards. My biggest gripe is that by making a dashboard the default interface for users, you lose the ability to broaden results outside your default report filters. For example, I have a project report that by default shows all open projects. But, from time to time I want to see all closed projects using the same view and groupings. If I change the report's filter to "All Closed Projects," my report now has zero results, because it's filtering for projects that are at the same time, open and closed. My only option is go to the system's projects tab and apply the filter, view, and grouping there (presuming I built them outside of the report interface in the first place). For users who aren't very proficient with the system, it defeats the purpose of giving them polished custom layouts. I understand there are plenty of arguments in favor of refining results; this is just my long winded way of saying I wish we could choose whether to refine OR apply a new filter to the current report.
