Project Numeric Priority - Auto Update Required

Avatar

We are looking for a way to have a field where a project owner can enter a priority from 1 to 99. These priorities may change at any time. Therefore if a project with a priority of 10 is moved to 1, we need all projects previously marked as 1 through 9 to adjust accordingly. If the top priority project (1) is marked as complete, we need projects 2 through 99 to move up in priority. This field would not be dependent on any data currently in the project--the project owner would manually choose these priorities. Thanks in advance for your help! Hi Laura, The "https://support.workfront.com/hc/en-us/articles/217182137">Portfolio Optimizer allows you to drag the Projects up and down manually (in addition to some nifty automatic sorting) and stores it in a built in Project level attribute called portfolioPriority, which stores the ordinal number of each Project within that Portfolio Optimizer's list (1, 2, 3...): just what you need. Doug - happen to know if this feature is available outside of the Portfolio Optimization tool? Wondering how we can accomplish this same functionality within a custom report? Jossua Hernandez Getty Images, Inc.

As far as I know, you cannot get the same functionality through a custom report. We've tried to re-prioritization functionality working in a number of different ways. 1. Using the "task Number" field on tasks, 2. Using the "Backlog Order" field on tasks and issues, and 3. Using the priority field from the Optimizer. In all cases, you can either not edit the number from a custom report at all, or you are forced to re-prioritize by hand so that if you move priority 7 up to 1, you'll have to re-type 1 through 6. It's a bit pain point, but overall we've had quite a lot of success utilizing the portfolio optimizer and Agile Backlog tools for drag-and-drop priority. James Bender Jackson/JTS

Hi Jossua, Yes, as James alluded to, the built in Project "Portfolio Priority" field can be simply added to any Project Report and then displays the ordinal number of that Project from an in-what-position-was-it-dropped within the Portfolio Optimizer...and to take advantage of the auto-renumbering, the Portfolio Optimizer then is the ticket.
