On my project how can I setup a resource to be available 50% of the time?

Hi: 1) You can set up a project plan “Unavailable Demand Plan”, create a task, and assign the person to that task 50%. That means the remainder of their scheduled time is available for other work; 2) You can create a schedule called “50% Availability” and only allow four hours a day on that schedule. Assign that schedule to the individual; You can’t make people available (except through a Schedule), but you can make them unavailable by assigning them to tasks. Thanks Eric. But I may not have stated this correctly. The resource only is available 20 hours a week, i.e., FTE of .5 So when I assign them to a task that is 8 hours I would expect the duration to automatically be 2 days. However, if I change the task to a different resource, I would then expect the duration to automatically be 1 day. The only way I seem to be able to do this is to manually change the duration. This causes problems as there does not seem to be a way to reset the task so that the duration is automatically calculated. I.e., I would then need to manually change it again. I hope that I don't need to create a dummy project. Any thoughts? Thanks

Hi Chris. In such "part time worker" cases, I'd suggest setting up a 20 hour Per Week Schedule and attaching it to the user in question. When the user is then attached to the Task (e.g. as Primary Assignee), Workfront is smart enough to recognize that the User's Schedule has precedence, and "gear back" the rate of work accordingly. Conversely, if you then took the Task away from that resource and assigned it to a different resource (either one with the Default 40 hour per week Schedule, or WITHOUT a Schedule, in which case, the Project Schedule then takes precedence...or, lacking one, the default Schedule then kicks in), Workfront would recompute the duration at a 40 hour per week pace, as you're seeking. Hi: I would suggest you assign that individual (and any other half-timers) a schedule of four hours per day. That way, when you assign them to a task of 8 planned hours, with Effort Driven, it will give you a duration of two days. If you remove that person and assign someone with a eight hour a day schedule, then the duration becomes one day. It is the combination of Task Constraint and schedule that will accomplish what you desire, I think. A dummy project won’t do what you want, as WorkFront will readily allow you to overload resources. Infinite capacity. Hope this helps! Eric

Is the resource only available 50% of the time for this specific project? Guessing you already know if its a resource that is always 50%, you can set their FTE = .5 on their My Settings>Resource Planning>FTE field.

Thanks Katherine, It is only for this project. I manage multiple projects in a PSO. And his available can change from project to project. So I don't want to set a global FTE for him.
