Client Facing Estimates (worked out from tasks)

Hi, does anyone have any advice on how to generate client facing estimate documents without having to pay for a plugin? Really can't understand why WF haven't developed this functionality. This solution http://store.atappstore.com/product/estimate/ is great but costs a lot. Thx Victoria Ollerton
