Portfolio Metrics that are configurable

Allow admins to configure these metrics over a fixed duration. It would also be useful to compare these year over year.Year over year, we may modify our business strategy, update score cards, increase or decrease budgets of various portfolios.

As the metrics are today, these metrics look very useful on the surface until you find that they start and go forever just like your college GPA. "Opps, that "D" in differential equations is going to kill my 4.0 final grade point average forever"

I have several change requests open against this. Some things to keep in mind on these and their related pages/tabs:

  • % of projects On Time includes ALL projects in portfolio - in ANY status. Therefore, if you have something in planning or in a status that equals developing an idea, it will count against this.
  • % On Budget does NOT include actuals! On Budget only takes the current plan vs budget into account. Therefore, you could have a budget of $1M, a plan of $1M, Actual Cost of $1.5M, and EAC of $2M and this project would show up as on budget.
  • Aligned is based off of the Scorecards. Even our Workfront consultant has recommended we don't use scorecards because they're not reportable. We have created a custom form that is used in place of the scorecard so we can score projects and report against the our custom scorecard. Aligned can't take this into account.
  • De-selecting any project in Portfolio Optimizer or hiding/filtering it out of the portfolio will remove that project from the metrics. Therefore, if you've accumulated a bunch of completed projects during the life of your portfolio and really just want to zero in on what's left and maybe some new requests, you'll have to do it with all of the clutter there or your metrics won't be accurate for helping in the decision-making process - which is the point of having them here. In my opinion, the metrics aren't going to be accurate after Day 1 anyway, because of the reasons above.
  • My Portfolio appears as if it's really designed to be used at the beginning of the portfolio planning process. For ongoing portfolio management, we either need updates to it or we need a new tool. I've built a dashboard to try to bridge the gap but take a ton more space to deliver the same info.
