Custom fields - Validation of entered values

Description - Any validation possibilites for entered values into custom fields would be great.

Why is this feature important to you - At the moment there is no possibility to validate any entered values into fields. We cannot validate, if e.g. a valid email address, or url was entered, also for date fields it is not possible to define, e.g. that the allowed choices have to be after a specific date,...

How would you like the feature to work - RegEx would be fine

Current Behaviour - no validation

@jon_chen Field validation has been on my wish list for years. It actually has a lot more traction and interest than is apparent. There are numerous "ideas" that would be solved by field validation that are separate and individual idea requests, each having only a handful of "likes". If they were aggregated together (as they should be), they would have quite a few "likes". Every coding and scripting language out there that engages forms has some form of validation, except Workfront's.

Here are some recent examples, and there are MANY more (Search "field validation"):

Can the date field be enhanced to "gray out" certain dates so that people cannot select those dates?

@jon_chen can you please bring in the votes from this idea into this one/merge them?

Customers can select any date on the planned completion date field. It would be great if we could apply constraints such as but not limited to:

  • no dates in the past
  • no weekends
  • no holidays
  • no tomorrow/next day

Hi @randyroberts Thanks for your message. I've merged the most popular ideas into this one since it is the most recently published idea.

@lgaertner Thank you for the submission! We think this is a good enhancement to the Workfront platform overall and this product area in particular!   Workfront currently prioritizes large-scale, foundational enhancements such as the new Reporting experience and changes to the core data model, so this item does not fit in our near-term roadmap. As such, I am marking this as Declined now, but we'll keep this in our backlog for the improvements for this area so that we can revisit the decision in the future.

@vazgen_babayan Is there a plan to get some sort of validation into the new reporting Canvas? I get that no one wants to add enhancements to the current reporting model if it's not going to be the future reporting platform, but validation is an essential tool for business in general. Every major "forms" platform out there has some sort of validation, except Workfront. IMO, this is a glaring ommission.

Hi everyone,

Happy to announce that this is already a work in progress. We are working on conditional validation of fields, which will allow you to define certain conditions (character limit, format validation, regex, etc.) and define validation error messages when those conditions are met.

This is something that will come early next year.

Thanks again for the idea!

@jon_chen I think you could mark this delivered now with validation released earlier this year? I do wish it was easier to use but it's something...

If this helped you, please mark correct to help others : )

Agreed Madalyn, it's not a complete solution and not easy to use but at least it's something.
