What is the best way to save a writable form which I created in LiveCycle so that all recvipients can open it whether on a PC or a MAC?

I don't understand your question.  Save a PDF and distribute it through whatever method you have available whether email, shared folder, website, ECM or other.

It seems like it should be no problem to open the form and fill in the blanks..but some folks are not able to open the form from a MAC (this was the most prevalent problem) but other folks just can’t open the form period.

I wondered if I need to save the form in a particular way. I had thought since it is a PDF that it would be no problem..but that was not the case.

Since this is an XFA form, Adobe Reader needs to be used to render the form.  On the machines where it's not working check to see if Adobe Reader or Acrobat is being used to display the form.

Primarily folks are using Adobe reader.

Is there an error message or anything else appearing when the open is attempted?

I don’t think so..just that they need to upgrade their adobe reader..which they always say that they have…but that doesn’t seem to change anything.

They may be encountering a probelm where the Google Chrome, Safari, or Firefox PDF viewer is used instead of Adobe Reader.  See here for how they can set the browser to use Adobe Reader.  http://helpx.adobe.com/livecycle/kb/xfa-forms-firefox-chrome.html

Also on Macintosh is make sure it is Reader opening the file and not Apple's Preview app.
