5.3 is out of the "core support" period which may be important to your organization. See http://www.adobe.com/support/products/enterprise/eol/

There is a lot of new and rich functionality in AEM 5.6 including integration with other Digital Marketing products such as Site Catalyst, Media Publishers, Social Communities, etc. Here is a list of what's new:
