Can we make necessary modifications so that the OOB Image component can make use of renditions that were created in DAM? If so what is the best way this can be achieved?

We have lot of image components in content that needs to be rendering the correct rendition based on device but wondering if the OOB image component code can be adjusted to fit this requirement without actually developing a new component.
