Auto-checkout and XML documentation and AEM 6.3 webclient toolbar

I use AEM with DITA. The documentation describes enabling auto-checkout using /system/console/configMgr

However, when I check disable edit without checkout, the result is that the "checkout" icon is greyed out in the web client and I can't edit the document. Do you know what needs to be done to allow checking out documents?
