Asset copy with same version info as source App

I have a requirement where I wanted to copy assets form my source application to destination (both are hosted in same AEM instance) in DAM which should maintain the same version information as the source application.
Normally, when I copy it creates a new version in the destination DAM Node.
Please let me know if someone has implemented this kind of requirement and what is the API used for the same.
