Accessing external third party API using Javascript activity within workflow

I've been attempting to access a third party API using a Javascript activity inside my workflows.  So far this has proven to be unsuccessful.  I've been trying to leverage the HttpClientRequest object within my javascript.  So now my question is whether or not this is even possible using a javascript activity within the workflow.  If it is possible, are there any adobe campaign configuration settings that need to be changed?  There are no network or firewall related issues as I can use tools like SoapUI or Postman from the adobe campaign app server with no issues.
