Can a user be assigned to multiple stages of an approval?

We have an approval process where stage one is assigned to a project role (In this project the user in question has been assigned to the project role using Bulk Assignments). The second stage of the approval process has the exact same user assigned by user name from the approval template.  In the project approval the user shows up in the second stage but not in the first. Only the job role is displayed in the first stage.  Is this because a user can't be assigned to more that one stage in an approval process?

I dont think there is a limitation on assigning users to the Approval process stages, unless the User(trying to replace with the Job role assignment) you are trying to add in stage 1 doesnt have the job role added to his user profile.

So they do have the job role on their account and are assigned the job role in the project.  In the approval template they are as a user, assigned to the second stage.  Why wouldn't workfront automatically assign them to the first stage if that is their role on the project?

I don’t think that’s how it works. Assigning an approval to a role is supposed to allow anyone in that role to trigger the approval. It’s not supposed to assign a specific user by name.
