Make Pinned Items A Menu

Description - Would love to see you develop pinned items to the next level and allow us to create our own menus. Currently a majority of our users have so many pinned items that too many fall into the 3 dot area. If they want to bring any items to the main area they have to remove and re-add pinned items. If we could change a pin into a personalized menu we could group in more meaningful ways to each user (similar to bookmark folders in a web browser).

Why is this feature important to you - UI enhancement, adoption, more user friendly and intuitive

How would you like the feature to work - Create a main item for the pinned area, i.e., 1-on-1 Meetings, that becomes a menu item with a caret and when you click on it you can add sub-menu pinned items like each of the 1-1 projects for your team members.

Current Behaviour - You can pin many items, depending on your browser "view" and whether it's zoomed in or out, you will see a limited number of items in your pinned area. Any items that don't fit will fall into the 3 dot area. The most recent pinned item ends up at the end of the list or if you have items in the 3 dot area they end up at the bottom of that popup. If you want to move it to the main pinned area you have to remove other items and then re-pin them.

@ewanh  I'd rather see this functionality developed in Favorites - ability to create folders for favorited items (still grouped by projects, reports, etc) but place objects into folders and re-order them as needed.

But keep my pins as a 1-click item to go to.

I'm not completely against folders for pins - as long as they are optional and I can still just pin those things that I really use ALL THE TIME. But I have a lot in Favorites and would even be happy if I could just re-order them to make them easier to find.

@Heather_Kulbacki, while the folders-on-favorites idea is also good, I like the idea of "folders on pins" from an admin point of view if it was allowed as a configurable item in Layout Templates like the current pins. It would mean I could devlop deeper standard interfaces for my users.

We set-up standard pins on our Layout Templates to emulate the Classic-style version of the global menu bar for quick access to features or common dashboards, for example. I could do some quite cool things if I could make pins into menu-esque GUI objects.

Hello @ewanh, Putting it in Favorites can mean an extra click and more scrolling.

I'm not opposed to it, but it potentially adds another layer, and with the current 40 items limit on favorites this would be less favorable. From a UI standpoint, that favorites list becomes lengthy and you have to scroll to get to Dashboards, for example. And click the more button if you have more than 5 of that object type favorited. If we were able to create grouped pins and a user has more than 5 things favorited in a specific object type, I would hope the behavior in a pinned folder would be that you have a longer list available since you don't need to group by object type and provide a more link.

As an admin, I'm pretty adept at finding what I need, so this isn't as big of an issue for me or our power users. This would be a big benefit for the folks we have with a Review/Request license. Which in my case is 2/3 of our user base.

To Heather's point I can see the benefit of grouping for the sake of educating people as to what object type it is, but I wouldn't push for that if pinned folders are an option. I would think it would be a better user experience if the object type was in parenthesis after the object name or even one of the NWE icons in front of the object name.
