Connecting Workfront Fusion with External Lookup Field

Has anyone had luck with a solution to use Fusion for authentication with token and populate external lookup field or connect the 2 together somehow (Fusion + External Lookup Field).. 

I am able to generate temporary access token in Fusion and retrieve data from API, but having trouble reflecting it back in WF in the external lookup field for users to see on a Request pre-submission.

I don't think you can have fusion populate the field with any confidence, the field times out after 3 seconds and sometimes it take more than that just for fusion to recognize the call.
