Updating a SharePoint Calendar

I need to update a SharePoint calendar as part of a workbench process. We can send email into a standard SharePoint document library to add a document, however I can't find a good way to add a calendar item. Has anyone done this before who can help?

I'm not 100% sure of a way to do this but you may be able to invoke a sharepoint workflow to do the update
