I have run into an issue lately where 60% of our customs were not receiving emails from a workflow. This was due to a filter in the query and is fixed now.
But we wanted to see if we can setup an alert if the audience drops below a certain amount so we can look at see if there is something wrong with the query or if data in our daily imports is messed up.

you could use the Test activity that contain the total number in the audience, so if you expect always more than xxxx records you could send an alert and then continue the process.
