Request you to explain the difference between an external signal and a sub-workflow in Adobe campaign classic, because not able to understand after reading the documentation.
Also, please provide the configuration steps for both, along with some use cases.
This would be really helpful, as it will enable me to utilize these activities to their full potential.

The documentation does provide examples and configuration steps for each activity but I'll let others chime in with specific use cases if they have them.
There are a couple of big differences between the two activities:
External signals are triggered via API calls and kick off separate workflows versus sub-workflows, which are triggered by a workflow within a workflow. Sub-workflows also run in sync with the primary workflow and can have their results linked back into the primary delivery.
