Changing the format of a custom field

When it comes to custom fields, they are changed often. Sometimes we will change them from a radio button style to a multiple selection dropdown. Unfortunately there is no way to change the format of the field without creating an entirely new one which is bad when there are 50+ options.

Ideally it would be nice to have a button that could change the format from one to the other without having to completely rewrite it.
