Boards API Documentation

Description - Documentation of the Boards API (GraphQL)

Why is this feature important to you - We have customers starting to use Boards within Workfront, and as with many other parts of Workfront there is a demand to automate/integrate with Boards and their Cards. Currently you can kind of reverse-engineer what the Workfront UI is doing with the GraphQL API and replicate that in Fusion (or other automation platforms) but there is no documentation on what can be done.  There is also no guarantee that the way things work right now will remain that way.

How would you like the feature to work - It would be great if the Boards API can be documented and versioned similar to how the REST API is. That way we could reliably start building integrations with it.

Current Behaviour - No documentation.

@davidcornwelllp This is a great idea.  Thanks for posting.

I would like to see this implemented as well.

This idea is currently being investigated by the Workfront Product Management team. An official response will be provided by the end of May. Thanks for your patience!

Certain specific scenarios are now available and documented as part of an open beta for a Boards Fusion Connector. We will continue to evaluate options to add to both the documentation and Fusion Connector functionality.

Thank you @nataliem27.  Did you mean "now available" rather than "not available"?  I'll certainly have a look at the Fusion connector though.

I absolutely meant "now", thank you for catching that so I could correct my original comment. [Insert facepalm]

@nataliem27  Where can I find that documentation? I'm trying to test a few things with boards in Fusion and I don't see where I can pull the card information easily.

As of now, there are no plans for Boards to publish a public API. However, customers can leverage the Boards Fusion Connector to build integrations. The Boards Fusion Connector is currently available in open beta.

I'm using the Boards Fusion Connector to try and add Checklist items to a card and getting no results.  Is there any trick to getting this working or a known bug?

Be careful of using checklist items if you are using a dynamic board. I had an issue where I had checklist items on a card on a dynamic board and when I tried to connect another project to the board, the checklist items disappear. According to what I found out from support this is expected behavior but users need to be aware of this.

I also received the following information from support:

There are two options for creating checklist items on a board: 1) Checklist items 2) Subtasks

Both behave in a similar fashion inside of Boards, but subtasks are added to the official task record and if a filter on a board is changed, these subtasks would not disappear. I would recommend leveraging subtasks rather than checklist items if they can. I know some customers can’t because of how their projects are run.

Checklist items are more informal and on a dynamic board. When a checklist item is created, it is not added to the official task record. As a result, the checklist items are wiped out if a user were to update the query filter rule for what records the user wants pulled into a Board.
