DTM: Starter guide and tips needed for data layer elements

Avatar

New to DTM and after reading few articles about DTM, I'm also quite confident that data layers are really good to use for taggins (at least for the long run). Are there any guides for Adobe DTM and it's data layers or is this (very!) short description https://microsite.omniture.com/t2/help/en_US/dtm/index.html#Data_Elements only help for us? :(

All those empty fields, would like if there was explanation on every field. Why or when to use "JS object" and when something else? Where do I code those data "variables"? Directly site or any js file? Would love if someone could give small example how to make data layer for s.pageName (for example)? What are all the steps needed and what do our coders need to do directly on the site? Of course any good links to articles about Adobe DTM are also nice? Thanks for all the help.

(Side note: Adobe has so good products but the lack of guides and especially tips and tricks from Adobe are needed much more. The new help section of marketing cloud, this community and http://blogs.adobe.com/digitalmarketing/category/analytics/ are good start, but more useful tips and tricks how to really use these tools are on my "wanted" list. :))

Hi Antti,

I was not able to find any Adobe documentation that explains the data element unfortunately (Adobe Please update your documentation).

However I looked online and I might have found some article that will give you more insight. It is from article talking about Satellite. I do not think it will matter much as DTM is Satellite as Adobe bought it not so long ago :

http://www.searchdiscovery.com/satellite/blog/unlock-the-true-power-of-your-tags/

Please also go to https://outv.omniture.com/ and under Analytics >> Dynamic Tag management there is a video about Map Data with Data element.

I hope that will help you.

Best regards.

Thanks for the feedback!  We are actively working on adding Data Elements documentation, since it is a very powerful feature and can make your implementations much more efficient.  This content will appear soon in the Help documents and I will give you an update here when it is available.  In the meantime, continue to post your questions here in the forum and the team will help you as best we can!

Thanks Alexis. Seems like very good information on those pages. Have to take some time to really investigate those.

I'm having some similar challenges trying to navigate my way through creation of data elements, including one that seems fairly simple. I'm trying to capture the text inside the H1 tag, but haven' t found a way to make that work using a variety of settings, including the one attached. Honestly, what would be really helpful is an inline validator within the tool when creating data elements and also some tool tips. Together these might prevent some of save>>approve>redo cycles. Meantime, any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Jim, Maybe try to get the value of "other" with the innerHTML or innerText attribute?  Or try the HTML attribute from the drop-down?
