Thread safety between workflow processes

We have two workflow threads trying to update the same AEM resource. Is there a way to make sure the resource is not updated or available for update to other workflow thread unless one is finished or have workflows of specific model execute in sequential fashion?

I don't think that this is possible ootb. But the workflow engine has a retry mechanism implemented for failed steps.
