Public vs. private member profile

Is there any good documentation on the difference between public and private member profiles as far as what is shared and who it is shared with?  I don't see this specific information in the AEM doc anywhere.  There is a strong concern that people don't realize they are sharing their profiles to anonymous users and those profiles display email addresses.
