I use mac, I've encountered an below error when I start author instance.
I tried to start the service again with deleting crx-quickstart folder.
What I confused is the things are doing well in windows installed BootCamp.

It also aren't made
crx-quickstart/repository/repository/index and crx-quickstart/repository/crx.default/index folders

I tried to execute "java -jar -Xmx1024m -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true cq5-author-p4502.jar -gui", it also got same error

I have had this problem when running CQ5.5 and McAfee on my desktop. The solution for the problem (please don't laugh) was to shut down all network connections (wi-fi off and nw-cable out) before starting.

I had a similar problem after upgrading my Mac to Mac OS 10.8.4.

The solution for me was to add my local hostname in to /etc/hosts with IP address 127.0.0.1

The error message in the error.log which led me to this solution was :-

This started happening for me when I upgraded my Mac to Yosemite. I found that Yosemite changed my computer host name and I needed to update my /etc/hosts file with my new name. Add a line for 127.0.0.1 with the new name.
