How do I customize a dialog field?

I would like to add a custom button to the pathfield sling:resourceType. I have found some documentation on creating a custom resource type, and most of that just links to no longer active articles on here. I have found next to nothing about how to edit an existing type, can anyone point me to some documentation on that?

I am trying to replicate the function of the Edit button in ACS Commons reports results, which takes you directly to the location of the selected resource/page.
