Content Fragment gives null for empty field post SP17

Hi, 

We have recently upgraded to Service Pack 17 from 7, we started getting null pointer exception from code whenever optional field from content fragment is returning null. Before upgrade we didn't get since empty fields are coming as empty which we have handled in code.

Any suggestions how we can fix it rather than going to every application content fragment and check for validation.
