AEM PDF Responses file is painfully slow

Hey all, is there anything I can do speed along responses file generated from importing PDF files? Each file is coming out of Designer at about 1.5 MB. When 20 files are imported into the responses file, it is essentially impossible to navigate. Adobe hangs non stop.

I'm trying to find out ways to optimize things.. Is there a way to trace where the hangup is happening? Any suggestions for what could be going wrong, possibly on the designer side? Thanks!

So here's the best I've been able to figure, since I can't find anything "official". Looks like Acrobat 2017 (which is the official version we're required to use at work) is still looking for disabled flash components in the registry, etc and hangs everything. Testing in Acrobat DC indicates that's properly removed there and as a result it works.. acceptably fast. Not as fast as when things used a flash interface, but better.
