One of the requests that has been cropping up recently at my organisation is can we do A/B testing in AEM.

We don't have a licence for Target and I was wondering, what are our options for doing A/B testing without it? Is it even possible?

You may simulate A/B tests using OOB AEM engine but to perform actual A/B tests, either buy a license of Target or some other third party tools like Optimizely, VWO etc. Any SaaS which fits your budget and requirements that matches your organizational goals.

Couple of tools may be available for a free trial period with constraints.

You would need Target to perform this use case.
