Paid Search Detection for google domains

Avatar

Level 3

I'm debugging my paid search detection rule by looking at a raw data feed, columns paid_search, page_url, ref_domain, and referrer columns. The rule is currently set to:

  • Search Engine: - any -
  • Rule: Contains
  • Filter: srch=1

My paid search links have a parameter WT.srch=1 in them, and from the data feed I can see the rule is working, even though the paid search links have WT.srch=1 and my filter is srch=1. This is good. In addition, all paid search links from Google have an internal custom parameter that determines it was a paid link, in this case it is affiliate_id=020. There are a few scenarios that I'm not sure if Omniture is correctly identifying a paid search link.

I noticed for a page URL containing affiliate_id=020 and WT.srch=1, the referring domain can be google.com, but the referrer can come from http://www.google.com/afs/ads/i/iframe.html. Today Omniture does not identify this as a paid search link, so I'm wondering the following:

  1. Is this referrer from the Google Display Content Network? If this is the case, then the rule is correctly not identifying as a paid search link
  2. If it is not the case, and since the referring domain is google.com, is Omniture incorrectly identifying this a natural search link?

The same happens for referrals from http://dp.g.doubleclick.net/apps/domainpark/domainpark.cgi?....

Let me know if this doesn't make sense and thank you for your help.

Hello,

Thanks for reaching out on our forums.

Just want to confirm if you are using adwords/adsense ?

afs stands for 'Adsense for search' and and doubleclick.net is related to Adwords ads showing on google display network.

Regards,

TM

Hi Jean,

Well we have only Search Engine and Query String options to configure Paid Search Detection. So you would have to think of some logic involving these two which uniquely identifies them.

I am afraid my knowledge of Adwords is limited, I can direct you to these two links which might answer your second question.

2. https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1011829?hl=en

Let me know if this helps.

This helps a lot thanks! I also checked and the existing rule does categorize google.com/afs as paid search links already.

Hi Tanmay,

We are using AdWords.

Adsense for search makes complete sense. How do you configure the paid search detection rule to count these as links coming from paid searches?

For doubleclick.net, is that strictly for content network? Meaning the ads are showing up to customers via contextual targeting instead of keyword matching to search queries?
