Modern SharePoint Online page views not matching Adobe Analytics page views

We have connected our SharePoint Online intranet to Adobe Analytics in the hopes of tracking metrics on all "story" (or article) pages easier, but we're finding the SharePoint page views and Adobe Analytics page views aren't lining up. Most times, the difference is within about 500 views, but once in a while, there's a greater discrepancy. Can anyone explain why this might be and what we can do to remedy it?

Examples of communications pieces and the differences in analytics:

  • Communication #1:
    • Adobe Analytics: 7,374 views
    • SharePoint Online: 6,096
  • Communication #2:
    • Adobe Analytics: 4,375
    • SharePoint Online: 11,672
  • Communication #3:
    • Adobe Analytics: 7,473
    • SharePoint Online: 7,153
  • Communication #4:
    • Adobe Analytics: 7,464
    • SharePoint Online: 5,714
  • Communication #5:
    • Adobe Analytics: 4,852
    • SharePoint Online: 4,618
  • Communication #6:
    • Adobe Analytics: 13,664
    • SharePoint Online: 12,268

I don't know how Sharepoint is tracking the views, but is it possible that there was some content on Sharepoint that loading multiple "pages" inside a single page?

Similar to iframe logic on a normal website, you need to be sure not have Page Views track on both the parent and the children in the frames... or a single load can result in multiple page views (once for the parent, and once for every frame of content).

If you can figure out if there is a tracking call that you can see in the network panel, maybe you can compare various pages for Adobe and SP Tracking side by side.. see if anything seems off.

Maybe there are pages that are missing Adobe completely, but are being captured by SP?

I am not sure how granular the SP tracking is.. can you identify what pages or sections have the most discrepancies?

Basically, the short answer is, as someone who knows your site the best, you will have to try and test... focusing on the areas you identified as being the problems first.. and if you can't identify it, then it might take a lot of persistence and luck to find...

Hi @user94318 ,

Discrepancies between SharePoint Online and Adobe Analytics metrics are not uncommon, as the two platforms track views differently. Below are possible reasons for these differences and recommendations to address them:

- SharePoint and Adobe Analytics might have slightly different ways of counting page views.
- Bots can sometimes inflate page view counts in both systems, but the extent of their impact might differ.
- If users have browser caching enabled, they might not always request a new page from the server, leading to fewer page views being recorded.
- Timing Differences: Metrics may not cover the exact same time range.
- Communication #2: The significant difference here (Adobe: 4,375, SharePoint: 11,672) suggests a potential issue with either the Adobe Analytics tracking code on this specific page or a problem with the data collection for this particular communication.

Recommendations:

- Thoroughly check the Adobe Analytics tracking code on all pages to ensure it is implemented correctly and consistently.
- Use the Adobe Analytics debugger to troubleshoot any issues with tracking code implementation.
- Pay close attention to how page views are defined and counted in each system.

Thanks!
