Is s.channel automatically set
We are also storing channel value in an evar, but I do see lot of garbage data in the evar while the data in site section report looks clean.

If the value is polluted in your reports it might be useful to run a report to identify examples of the pages which are passing the "dirty values" so that you can get your developers to address them.
