Calculation of Average Time Spent on Page in Adobe Analytics

Hi All,

Would like to get your opinion as to how SiteCatalyst derive Average time spent on Page as metrics in Report and Analytics. As per site https://marketing.adobe.com/developer/forum/reporting/how-sitecatalyst-calculate-total-time-spent-on

Average Time Spent on Site = Total Time Spent/ (Visits - Single Page Visits), Can I apply similar logic for Time spent on Page calulation as below?

Average Time Spent on Page = Total Time Spent/ (Page Views - Single Page Visits)

Can Single Page Visits be obtained from SiteCatalyst directly or can I use the formula below?

Single Page Visits = Bounce Rate * Page Views

Please advise whether this approach is correct to Calculate Time Spent on Page or if there are some other way of doing so then please share.

Thanks,

Aditya Tarun

Average Time Spent on Page is a standard metric in R&A. Navigate to Site Content> Pages Report and add the 'Average Time Spent on Page' metric. There is additional Adobe data logic that goes into the Time Spent metric, which to my understanding makes it impossible to calculate at a page level w/ other standard metrics. A good review of the time spent metric can be found on the help: site:

https://marketing.adobe.com/resources/help/en_US/reference/metrics_time_spent.html

https://marketing.adobe.com/resources/help/en_US/reference/metrics_ts_page_calculation.html

Single Page Visits can be accessed direct via the 'Single Access Metric' OR you if you want to view by Single Hit Visits you can use the 'Bounces' metric.

Hi Aditya,

Single Page Visits metric is available on Ad Hoc analysis only.

If you don't have access to that I would recommend you download a Single Page Visit for your report suite.

This report would provide you with info on pages that have a single page visit only indicating the no. of visits that were single page visits in nature.

You can then pick up the relevant page and compare the output with the formula that you've used.

In SC 15, you can find the single page visit report in this way:

View All Reports >> Navigation >> Pages >> Paths >> Entries & Exits >> Single Page Visits

Let me know if this resolves your problem

Kind Regards

Hi Rahul,

Thanks for your suggestion, however let me represent details of metrics from which I am looking to derive Average Time spent on Page.

For a particular page report metrics were as follows:

Page Views = 70,108 , Time Spent = 3.8 minutes , Bounce Rate = 87.3% , Bounces = 26,885 , Entries = 30,777 , Visits = 63,166 , Total Seconds Spent = 2,004,921

Single Page Visit (from Path flow report) = 28,953 (Which actually is equivalent to Single Access metric)

From my Calculation Single Page Visit = Bounce Rate * Page Views = 0.873*70,108 = 61,204 (Which doesn't match with Single Page Visits metric from Path flow report)

However when I use Calculated Single Page Visits metric,

Time Spent = Total Seconds/(Page Views - Single Page Visits) = 2,004,921/(70,108 - 61,204) = 225 seconds or 3.75 minutes which is near to 3.8 minutes as provided by SiteCatalyst metrics.

But if I use Single Page Visits from SiteCatalyst Page Flow Report, then

Time Spent = Total Seconds/(Page Views - Single Page Visits) = 2,004.921/(70,108 - 28,953) = 48 seconds or 0.8 minute which doesn't match with time spent = 3.8 as provided by SiteCatalyst metrics.

So I would like to know how to derive formula for Time Spent on Page metric from other SiteCatalyst metrics?

Please provide your findings.

Thanks & Regards,

Aditya Tarun

Thanks Brian for your help, however its really tedious to derive Time spent on Page metrics from other SiteCatalyst metrics.

Hi Aditya,

I am not suggesting to try and derive Time Spent on Page as it is not possible due to the logic involved to calculate by Adobe. The standard metric is the best option.

Has this metric been removed? I can no longer find it in reports and analytics metrics

The metric average time spent on page is not available in reports and analytics.  Do you have an alternative suggestion?

You are correct that Time Spent or Average Time Spent on Page has been removed.  I believe that Average Time Spent on Site works the same and should be applied to the appropriate pages report.  Confirm how the Pages Report was configured so as to understand how time is calculated for the report or page.  i.e. evar vs prop

Hi, you keep saying it is a standard metric on the Site Content > Pages report, but it is not there on my version

Interesting.

We have the following Dimension:

Time Spent on Page - Bucketed

Time Spent on Page - Granular

and the following metrics:

Average Time on Site

Time Spent per visit

Time Spent per visitor

Average Time Spent on Site (seconds)

I wonder if this is a difference between Prime / Ultimate etc.
