Making Segments Actually Global

It would be great if we could pick to have a segment applied to one suite or to multiple suites within the segment manager. The way it is setup now isn't very helpful. You still have to uncheck the box to see all of the segments or duplicate the segments like in the old segment manager. You should also put the ability to pick from the list when building a segment. That was actually helpful and is gone.

I have a number of report suites that use a large number of the same segments. I created all these under one report suite. I have assigned these segments to the appropriate user groups.

However, they are hidden under the check box that displays only the segments created under that given report suite. For most report suites, users see no segments unless they uncheck the box every time they open the segments list.

There are two issues. 1) Unchecking the box all the time is a rather tedious user experience. 2) Even with training, users  forget about the check box and assume the segments behind it do not exist.

Also, it seems likely that most of our end users will create most of their personal segments under the report suite they typically  work in. So most shared segments will be behind the check box and personal segments will be in front. (That is not necessarily bad, just odd.)

I can duplicate the segments to the various report suites, but that seems inefficient. As I believe is being suggested in this exchange, it would be better to assign a segment to multiple report sties from a pick list without an actual copy.  (This  would also presumably keep the segment s from showing up multiple times in  the report builder or segment compare pick lists.)

@jacalynm , can you clarify a couple of your comments?

Can you expand on this? There was no segment manager in the past, and there definitely wasn't a way to duplicate segments across report suites easily.

I could use an explanation of this as well. Which list do you mean? The new segment builder does include a list of segments which you can use as "building blocks" to create a new segment. The list of building blocks actually includes dimensions, segments, and metrics.

Thanks!

I mean that you still have to create segments multiple times in the backend like in the old system. But now that all the segments are visible, it's actually messier than it was before. So either you have to create multiple of the same or the users have to remember to CONSTANTLY uncheck the box for the reporting suite. It would be much easier if you can create the segment once and assign it to all the reporting suites that need it. It would be great if there was also a Global option so you can assign it to all of the suites instead of manually picking all of them when needed.

I mean on the Value that I enter. An example would be on Device Type. If I wanted to create a sement for mobile phone users, there used to be a list of device types that populated to choose from that I no longer see.

I would also like to add that it would be great to add in a who you want to share the segment with while building it instead of waiting until it's saved and then sharing it.

Thanks!

This is helpful, @jacalynm . Thanks. We are definitely considering the option of assigning a segment to specific report suites so that it is a little cleaner. We were discussing that possibility even just today, so this is timely.

As for the change to the way you select device types and a few other fields, there were some localization/internationalization challenges that prompted us to switch to the type of list that is there today. If you click in the text box for Device Type, you should get a list of all of the possible options; the downside is that for some fields like city, you can no longer do a "contains." In any case, it's good feedback. We want to make the segment building process easier if we can.

Thanks again - we'll keep a close eye on this one.
